Alcohol and Other Drugs Services (AODS) develop and provide innovative solutions to reduce the harmful impact of drug use. AODS works closely with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) referring clients for continuing support. AODS provide a range of services including assessment, referral, counselling, information, case management, dual diagnosis and group programs.
Programs
Outpatient detox – Outpatient detox is available for people seeking treatment for alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, benzodiazepines and other substances of dependence.
Inpatient detox – The Hospital Alcohol and Drug Service (HADS) at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is a state-wide service providing inpatient withdrawal or stabilisation for people with alcohol and other drug dependency.
Counselling – Experienced and multi-disciplinary teams of psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals will provide counselling therapies and support to people with alcohol and other drug concerns, their families and friends. The Hot House program (located at Biala) provides counselling specific to young people under 25 years and their families.
Needle and Syringes Programs (NSP) – This program will provide sterile injecting equipment including needles and syringes, swabs and ‘sharps bins’ for the safe disposal of used needles and syringes. Sterile water and wheel filters are also available for a small fee. Vending machines are also available at Biala (Brisbane City), Redcliffe and Caboolture Community Health Centre which can dispense packs for a small fee during NSP closure times.
Opioid replacement therapy (ORT) – For people who are dependent on opiates (e.g. heroin, oxycodone and morphine), methadone and buprenorphine are prescribed to replace the opioid substance/s. ORT is highly regulated and clients receiving this treatment will be registered under the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program with Queensland Health.
Group therapy programs – A variety of group therapy programs are offered. Group therapy compliments individual treatment plans. Groups assisting with detoxification, preparing for change and building support networks are currently available. Your case worker will discuss the various group therapy options with you as you plan your treatment.
