About QuIVAA

Queensland Injectors for Advocacy and Action is a community-based organisation which aims to represent injectors and illicit drug users, through systemic advocacy and representing issues affecting users in Queensland. Operating on a peer based philosophy, QuIVAA encourages and supports current and former injectors and illicit drug users to be active in all levels of QuIVAA activity and provide input into strategic responses and policy development of drug use in Queensland.

Programs

Peer Qnect: Peer Qnect is a free and confidential service run by QuIVAA to provide support to people who use substances, including those on the opioid treatment program or seeking opioid treatment across QLD.

  • Opioid treatment support/advocacy/mediation
  • Safer substance use
  • Questions or concerns regarding your prescriber or pharmacy?
  • Experiencing stigma or barriers to healthcare in Queensland?
  • Peer Qnect also provides training for prescribers, clinics and relevant community services

Hi Ground: Hi-Ground is a project of QuIVAA and QuIHN Ltd. It was established in 2020, when QuIHN received a small amount of COVID19 funding to help develop the service in an online capacity. Working from a harm minimisation framework the core aim of Hi-Ground is to reduce the harms associated with illicit drug use. In 2021 QuIVAA took over the management of the project enabling the project to move forward as a peer-led initiative. The aims of this project and website is to create a safe, diverse and inclusive community for people who use drugs. We hope that by providing a space free from judgement and damaging stigmatisation and instead offering support and harm reduction education we can improve the health and wellbeing of our fellow Queenslanders and broader Australian Community.

QuIVAA has a range of presentations on a range of harm reduction topics and issues relating to stigma and discrimination, AOD peer workforce. Overdose Prevention & Naloxone, Hep C, opioid treatment, and the issues for people who use drugs in QLD. We may be able to tailor a workshop or presentation for your needs. If you would like to book a speaker from QuIVAA, you can email us at admin@quivaa.org.au

Individual Supervision: At our organisation, we prioritise the professional growth and development of our peer workers by offering individual supervision sessions. Recognising the unique challenges and experiences faced by peer workers, we provide personalised guidance and support tailored to specific needs. Through these one-on-one sessions, peer workers have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, address any concerns or difficulties they may encounter in their roles, and enhance their skills and knowledge in providing peer support.

Community of Practice: Our community of practice is a welcoming space designed exclusively for peers workers who have navigated the complexities of drug use and aim to translate those experiences into constructive avenues for personal and professional growth. Think of it as a gathering among friends, where confidentiality is paramount, and mutual support is the cornerstone. Through regular online sessions, we come together to share insights, exchange ideas, and develop strategies for utilising our lived- living experiences in our respective roles. This isn’t about expectations or pressures; it’s about showing up authentically and being present for one another. Whether you’re seeking to enhance your professional peer development, forge connections with like-minded individuals, or simply enjoy engaging conversations.
