QuIHN is a statewide, not for profit, and non-government health service which provides a variety of health services to people whose lives are or have been affected by substance use, as well as their friends, families and members of the community who are or have been touched or affected by substance use.
QuIHN operates from a harm reduction and evidence-based framework. QuIHN provides medical services, needle syringe programs, counselling, peer support, distribution of information, education and training, workforce development initiatives, life skills programs and services that relate to substance use, blood borne viruses, sexual health and other psychological and physical health issues.
Programs
Needle and Syringe Program (NSP)
- Sterile injecting equipment and used needle disposal options
- Access to free Naloxone and training on how to use it to prevent an opiate overdose
- Information, testing and support for blood-borne viral infections, sexually transmitted infections and injecting related injury, illness and disease.
We also offer:
- Non-clinical counselling, information and support
- Referrals to other drug treatment programs and health & welfare agencies
- Hepatitis C Testing, Treatment and Support: Non-judgmental Hepatitis C testing and treatment support for people who inject drugs and people accessing drug and alcohol rehabilitation and support services. Testing is available via Hep C Point of Care Hep C (POCT), on site and selected outreach locations. This program seeks to provide innovative strategies and models of care that aim to increase access to treatment/care.
- Peer Education: this program aims to reduce drug-related harms and promote the health of people who use substances through effecting changes in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours in individual substance users, and influencing the norms and culture in substance use groups.
- Individual Counselling: QuIHN offers individual clinical counselling for people whose lives are affected by substance use and related mental health and/or parenting and family issues that may be present. Therapeutic and support groups are also available to complement the individual counselling. There is a wait list for individual counselling.
- MudMaps Group: This 2-hour weekly group based in Brisbane, is a facilitated psychosocial education group for individuals making or contemplating changes to behaviours relating to substance use. This weekly group is an open group, all welcome. Wiser Minds Group: This 1-hour weekly group is a DBT skill building group. All are welcome to come and learn a new DBT skill each week.
- Nuts and Bolts Group: This 1-hour group is a 4-session rolling group. Come and learn about harm reduction and relapse prevention along with an introduction to all QuIHN services.
- Mindfulness Group: This 45minute group is a wonderful way to end the week. Come along and learn a new mindfulness skill each week.
- MAISE Group: QuIHN offers an 8-week course on Mental Health and Illicit Substance Education (MAISE) which is a psychoeducational group runs for 2 hours each week over an 8-week period. This is a closed group and requires assessment before being registered for the next group.
- The Treehouse Parenting Program: This therapeutic group program engages parents who experience substance use and mental concerns in a non-judgemental and supportive manner. This is a closed group and requires assessment and being registered for the next group.

Alcohol and other Drug Counselling
QuIHN’s counselling services provide support to individuals who wish to address their drug use, we also support any mental health concerns (dual diagnosis). Counselling is also available for friends, family or carers of someone with substance use and/or mental health concerns.

QuIHN offers a range of group programs for people whose lives are affected by substance use and any related mental health and/or parenting and family issues that may be present.
Qld Pharmacotherapy Advice and Mediation Service (QPAMS)
A peer-based service supporting people who are on pharmacotherapy treatment in QLD. Providing people with information and support about methadone, buprenorphine or other opiates treatment. Can also provide referrals to clinics and GPs for more information.
