About Gindaja

Gindaja Treatment and Healing Indigenous Corporation is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation dedicated to improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people impacted by problematic alcohol and/or substance dependency. Gindaja provides AOD Education, Treatment, Recovery and Healing to people from Yarrabah and across the Far North Queensland region, including Cairns and surrounds, the Tablelands, Torres Strait Islands and Cape communities. We operate across 2 service sites in Yarrabah: our 17 bed Residential Recovery Centre is located in Back Beach Road and our day-based Learning and Wellbeing Centre is in the central township of Yarrabah. The service caters for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, men and women over 18 years with drug and alcohol related problems.

Our Residential Recovery Centre offers:

  • Residential rehabilitation and recovery
  • Art Therapy Program and Trauma Counselling
  • 24/7 Family Wellbeing Empowerment Program
  • Gindaja’s Anger Management program – ‘Don’t Get Me Wild’
  • Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Awareness Education program – ‘Connecting the Dot’s
  • AA ‘Thought for the Day’
  • Rest and cultural activities – traditional healing, yarning circles.
  • Individual and group counselling
  • Support and advice on life after rehabilitation
  • Post residential – Aftercare follow-ups
  • Step-Up residential accommodation – transition accommodation from residential rehabilitation back to community

Intake, assessment and referral

Referrals are accepted from any individual or organisation including: self-referral, health services, GP’s, criminal justice services, other alcohol and drug services, mental health, disability, child safety, homelessness and family violence services, among others.

Additional information

No withdrawal management (detoxification) or Needle and Syringe Program provided on site.

Day programs clients are offered transport to and from programs within Yarrabah. Residential clients are provided transport for essential services.

Outreach services provided for Learning and Wellbeing Centre day clients residing in Yarrabah.
Aftercare provided to past residential clients in Yarrabah, Cairns and surrounds.
