Alcohol and Other Drugs Services (AODS) develop and provide innovative solutions to reduce the harmful impact of drug use. AODS works closely with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) referring clients for continuing support. AODS provide a range of services including assessment, referral, counselling, information, case management, dual diagnosis and group programs.
Programs
Outpatient detox (also known as “withdrawal management”):
Outpatient detox is available for people wanting to stop the use of alcohol or other drugs under medical supervision. Our detox service is provided by a team of health professionals who provide a daily physical health review, usually for 5-7 days of treatment. If it is not safe to detox out of hospital, we can assist with admission to Hospital Alcohol and Drug Service (HADS) at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Inpatient detox:
The Hospital Alcohol and Drug Service (HADS) at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is a state-wide service providing inpatient withdrawal or stabilisation for people with alcohol and other drug dependency.
Counselling and Support Services:
Counselling and support is provided to people with alcohol and other drug concerns, their families and friends. Health care professionals provide a range of services including counselling therapies and group treatment programs.
Needle and Syringes Programs (NSP):
We provide free sterile injecting equipment to people who inject drugs. Sterile water and wheel filters are also available at low cost. We also provide advice on how to avoid harms around drug use (including blood borne viruses and vein care) and can facilitate access to take-home naloxone for use in case of accidental overdose.
Opioid Dependence Treatment (ODT):
For people who are dependent on opioids (e.g. heroin, oxycodone, morphine, codeine etc.) we offer ODT including the prescription of methadone or buprenorphine (including long-acting injectable buprenorphine). Dosing of this medication promotes stability, reduces cravings and helps people in their recovery. A thorough medical assessment is conducted before clients are registered on the Queensland Opioid Dependence Treatment program.
