The Alcohol and Other Drugs Service (AODS) is part of the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service. AODS’ main office is in Rockhampton, but we also provide outreach services to Yeppoon, Biloela, and Emerald.
AODS aims to reduce the harm from alcohol and drug use as well as improve the health and wellbeing of our clients, their families, and the community. To achieve this aim, AODS provides a range of treatment services and programs
Programs
Treatment services – AODS clinicians utilise a range of interventions including screening, opportunistic and brief intervention, assessment, individual treatment planning, case management, individual and group counselling, psychotherapy, and referral for detoxification, residential rehabilitation or other appropriate services.
Opioid Treatment Program – Opioids such as methadone and buprenorphine may be prescribed as a means of keeping opioid dependent people ‘safer’ legally and physically while they work on the appropriate areas of their lives.
Drug diversion programs provide people who are questioned or arrested in relation to an eligible drug offence with the opportunity to divert from the criminal justice system. A qualified health service provider will conduct a combined assessment, education, and counselling session with the person, provide information and advice on the possible health and legal consequences of continued use, and develop a plan to address their drug taking behaviour.
Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) – The NSP aims to reduce the spread of blood borne viruses and injecting related injury and disease among injecting drug users. The Rockhampton NSP provides sterile injecting equipment and safe disposal options for sharps produced in the community as well as information, education, health referral and support services for people at risk from injecting drug use. Harm Reduction- Provision of information and education to the community, including safe handling and disposal of sharps, supporting people who use drugs, overdose prevention and response, Naloxone training and provision. Referral to AODS and other services. Promoting the principles of harm reduction.
