SUMMARY:“But it’s the Least of Their Problems…” – Barriers to Smoking Cessation in Young People Aged Under 18yrs
DESCRIPTION:Young people aged under 18 experience different tobacco related harms to adults and current smoking cessation treatments and policy are focussed on adults and don’t respond to harms unique to young. This presentation will summarise a qualitative study conducted with clinicians from multiple disciplines and across several settings around the barriers to smoking cessation in young people. \nBec is a Senior Social Worker in the Dovetail Team. Before her work with Dovetail\, she supported both young people and adults in her roles as youth worker\, family case manager\, group work facilitator and alcohol and other drugs counsellor in the not-for-profit sector. Since starting with Dovetail in 2019\, Bec has become particularly interested in the topic of nicotine dependence in young people and more recently\, the emergence of vaping as a new mode of nicotine delivery. \nKaren is a Clinical Psychologist and Board approved supervisor for psychologists. Karen has worked with adults\, children\, families in areas of community mental health\, persistent pain\, tobacco cessation and AOD. She has experience with research\, giving lectures\, group facilitation\, counselling and workforce development.

SUMMARY:Therapeutic interventions for methamphetamine dependence
DESCRIPTION:Crystalline methamphetamine (“ice”) is a significant and growing public health concern in Australia\, with approximately 300\,000 people now dependent on this drug. There are currently no approved pharmacotherapies that can be delivered as a scaleable and cost-effective treatment to meet the growing treatment demand. Mirtazapine\, an approved antidepressant medication\, has recently been identified in early clinical trials as the first potentially effective treatment option. The recently funded Tina trial will be conducted by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) and evaluate whether mirtazapine is a safe\, effective\, and feasible treatment in routine clinical practice. \nThis webinar will present an overview of evidence for treatment of methamphetamine dependence\, and future directions. \nThe ASCEND program grant (Advancing the health or people who use drugs: hepatitis C and drug dependence) is a collaboration between UNSW Sydney’s Kirby Institute and National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC)\, funded by the National Health and Medical Research Centre. \nSpeakers \nChair: Professor Michael Farrell \n• Dr Steven Shoptaw – What doesn’t work\, and what might work? An overview of the evidence. (20 minutes) \n• Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin – Mirtazapine for methamphetamine dependence: Will it work in routine clinical practice?(15 minutes) \n• Panel discussion (20 minutes) with: Dr Steven Shoptaw\, A/Prof Rebecca McKetin\, Professor Nadine Ezard

SUMMARY:The safety of pharmaceutical drugs of dependence in pregnancy
DESCRIPTION:Pharmaceutical drugs of dependence are a group of drugs that have a recognized therapeutic need but are associated with a higher potential for misuse\, abuse and dependence compared with other prescription drugs. These drugs are commonly used to treat a wide variety of disorders the affect women of a reproductive age\, including severe pain (opioid such as oxycodone and fentanyl)\, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (methylphenidate and dexamphetamine)\, opioid dependence (methadone and buprenorphine)\, severe anxiety (alprazolam)\, and sleep disorders (flunitrazepam). \nIn pregnancy\, these drugs have the potential to result in serious harm for both the mother and her child. However\, the evidence surrounding the safety of the use of pharmaceutical drugs of dependence during pregnancy is disproportionately low in comparison to the suspected frequency that which it is likely to occurs within our community. This seminar will examine the emerging research in this field. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Erin Kelty is a Research Fellow and NHMRC Emerging Leader in the School of Population & Global Health at the University of Western Australia. Her primary areas of interest are in medication safety in pregnancy\, pharmacoepidemiology\, and substance use disorders. She has considerable experience in the use and analysis of linked health data.
