SUMMARY:Webinar: Synthetic Cannabis - Information for Healthcare Professionals with guest presenter Dr Stephen Bright
DESCRIPTION:The Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre is hosting a free webinar on Thursday 13 February 2020 with guest presenter Dr. Stephen Bright from the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University and will follow with an open Q & A session. The webinar will run for approximately 40 minutes and is free to attend. \nIn 2011\, synthetic cannabis products containing synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists were being sold in Western Australia (WA) as “kronic”. Initial legislative responses led to increased harm due to the inadvertent promotion of products containing new synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists that were more harmful than those first banned. After more than 40 state and federal legislative changes\, overall rates of synthetic cannabis use in WA have fallen; though there is evidence to suggest the use of synthetic cannabis remains an issue among some marginalised populations and remote communities. This webinar will provide an overview of how synthetic cannabis emerged as a drug of concern in WA. In doing so\, information will be provided to assist healthcare professionals to identify and respond to synthetic cannabis use. \nThere is no additional software required to join the webinar\, other than a stable internet connection. We’d recommend that you use Google Chrome to view the webinar. \nThe webinar will be held at: \n\n1:30pm (NSW\, Vic\, Tas and ACT)\n1:00pm (SA)\n12:30pm (Qld)\n12:00pm (NT)\n10:30am (WA).\n\nMore information can be found here. \nAccess the webinar online here (please note the session will open approximately 10 minutes prior to the start time). \nParticipants are invited to register their interest prior to the event with the webinar organiser Vilma FitzGerald (contact details below). \nWebinar Organiser\nVilma FitzGerald\nSenior Research Officer\nAustralian Indigenous HealthInfoNet\nPh: (08) 6304 6328\nEmail: v.**********@*****du.au \n  \nPlease note that this webinar will be recorded\, and will be made available on the HealthInfoNet website at a later date.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Smoking among disadvantaged and vulnerable groups with Dr Veronica Boland
DESCRIPTION:The Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre is hosting a free webinar on Thursday 6 February 2020 with Dr Veronica Boland from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) and will follow with an open Q & A session. The webinar will run for approximately 40 minutes and is free to attend. \nThe disparity in smoking prevalence between the most and least advantaged Australians contributes to health inequalities. Understanding the experiences of quitting smoking from the perspectives of smokers from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds provides key insights into the factors that inhibit and promote quitting behaviours. In this webinar\, Dr Veronica Boland will present research findings conducted with socioeconomically disadvantaged smokers from a national randomised controlled trial (RCT) and a feasibility study into the use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. The webinar aims to inform healthcare workers and reAlsearchers about key barriers to quitting and future directions for quit smoking support. \nThere is no additional software required to join the webinar\, other than a stable internet connection. We’d recommend that you use Google Chrome to view the webinar. \nThe webinar will be held at: \n\n1:00pm (NSW\, Vic\, Tas and ACT)\n12:30pm (SA)\n12:00pm (Qld)\n11:30am (NT)\n10:00am (WA).\n\nAccess the webinar online here (please note the session will open approximately 10 minutes prior to the start time). \nParticipants are invited to register their interest prior to the event with the webinar organiser Vilma FitzGerald (contact details below). \nPlease note that this webinar will be recorded\, and will be made available on the HealthInfoNet website at a later date.

SUMMARY:Get funded: Is your social purpose organisation 'funding ready'? - Redlands
DESCRIPTION:A funding opportunity—whether that be a grant application\, tender application or pitch to a funder—should be the summary of a detailed planning and service design process with a clearly articulated model and logic. We are forever advising social purpose organisation to take the time to design their program or service model first before thinking about matching it to funding opportunities. \nThis workshop provides an opportunity for social purpose organisations to build their knowledge in a simple three step approach to effective funding submissions: \n\nDefine the issue – is there a genuine need for your program or service?\nPresent the solution – why will your solution work?\nDescribe your strengths – what sets you apart from your competitors?\n\nGet Funded has been developed with practicality in mind\, focusing on the key components of the concept development process. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the facilitator\, ask questions along the way and learn from others working in similar areas. We regularly work with funding providers and commissioning organisations\, so we have a thorough understanding of what funders are looking for. \nWe encourage workshop participants to stick around after the session to network over a complementary tea\, coffee\, beer or wine. Networking with other likeminded people and organisations is a great way share learnings. \nMore info and regos at: https://evaluation_ready_redlands.eventbrite.com.au

SUMMARY:The Right to Health in the Human Rights Act of Queensland: A Crash Course
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Queensland’s Parliament passed the Human Rights Act of Queensland (HRAQ)\, which will make Queensland the third Australian State/Territory to implement rights legislation. \nThe new HRAQ will have 23 rights\, including the right to health (Article 37). \nArticle 37 Right to Health Services\n(1) Every person has the right to access health services without discrimination.\n(2) A person must not be refused emergency medical treatment that is immediately necessary to save the person’s life or to prevent serious impairment to the person. \nThe right to health in the new HRAQ is a significant milestone: this is the first time the right to health will be domesticated and justiciable in Australia. \nThis workshop will provide a ‘crash course’ on what is the right to health\, what are the key right to health challenges likely to emerge in Queensland\, and how can this human right be leveraged to advance the health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders\, especially as part of Australia’s larger Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) commitment to Leave No One Behind by year 2030. \nThis workshop will appeal to: \n\nPublic health and development policy officers\nCivil society\, community\, social & legal advocates\nQueensland medical\, health and social service providers\n\nABOUT THE FACILITATOR: \nDelivered by Dr Claire E Brolan (PhD (Public Health) MA LLB (Hons) BA). Claire is a qualified lawyer (non-practising)\, and right to health and SDG health equity and wellbeing policy specialist. \nClaire has some 60 peer-reviewed and other publications in (i.e) The Lancet\, Bulletin of the World Health Organization\, Medical Journal of Australia\, Australian & New Zealand Journal of Public Health\, Australian Journal of Human Rights\, and Medical Law Review. \nClaire has experience conducting legal and social advocacy for access to essential medicines and health care and related social services for vulnerable and minority populations in both the UK and Queensland\, and has worked with leading right to health scholars from around the world providing advice and guidance to the European Commission on SDG 3 (Health & Wellbeing). \nClaire completed her PhD and Post-Doctoral studies on the right to health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, University of Toronto in June 2018. She is currently co-authoring a textbook on interdisciplinary right to health approaches. Claire sits on the Global Council for Financing the SDGs\, hosted by the Government of the UAE\, is a community representative on the International Emergency Medicine Committee of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine\, and is the Medical Sector Representative on the Queensland Red Cross’ International Humanitarian Law Committee.
